3/1 Collegian Café | An Inspiring Discussion with Public Defender Nicole Duncan

On Monday, March 1st at 7pm CST, join Collegian Café for an inspiring discussion with Nicole Duncan. Ms. Duncan is the sole African-American juvenile public defender in the Colorado State Public Defender system. She works with several of her colleagues to help increase the number of public defenders of color. Nicole battled the ‘I’m not enough’ narrative her entire life due to countless unforeseen challenges, and she continues to battle additional false narratives such as being an ‘imposter’ the moment she walks into a courtroom. Nonetheless, Nicole finds joy, power, and inspiration in mentoring and encouraging aspiring professionals of color, and the children she represents. Her number one message to them is that they do not have to leave themselves at the door, they do not have to play small, and their story is powerful. Nicole uses her story of loss, regret, pain, and overcoming obstacles, as one of the strongest tools in her toolbox, and wants others to know the power they wield in their own stories too.

What false narratives are influencing you on your college campus? Are you finding the strength to create your own storyline? Do you believe that your story, no matter how challenging, can actually be the launching pad to your success? Nicole’s story is an inspiring journey that will remind all of us that in our darkest times, we can find the hero within.

Nicole is a 2016 graduate from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, California. She presently works in the Juvenile Division at the Denver Regional Office of the Colorado State Public Defender’s Office. She’s also worked with the ACLU of Los Angeles, and the NAACP National Headquarters. Nicole is an active member of the Sam Cary Bar Association, Colorado Attorneys Against Police Violence, and the Colorado Juvenile Defender Center. Nicole cares deeply about the young people she represents, and she is particularly passionate about ending the overrepresentation of juveniles of color in the criminal justice system.

Boys Hope Girls Hope is excited to welcome Nicole Duncan to Collegian Café, and looks forward to a powerful discussion. Please contact Erin at ebeezley@bhgh.org for the link to the Zoom call.
