Director of Development

As the Director of Development, the selected candidate will direct advancement efforts for the Kansas City affiliate. A strong focus on fund development outcomes through donor acquisition and stewardship, and strategic development planning (capital campaign, major gifts, and grant writing) is an essential function of this role. The Director will work closely with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors to lead the organization in completion of its strategic goals for sustainability and expansion, growing its current budget and endowment. The Director serves as a strong partner with the Executive Director, to guide and support the Board leadership in its top two priorities: developing a case statement and strategy for diversity, equity, and inclusion; and to grow public awareness of the Kansas City affiliate. This position will be responsible for supervising a full-time VISTA volunteer who will assist the Director of Development with tasks such as management of CRM, donor acknowledgement, development reporting, special events and appeals, and grant seeking, reporting, and other support.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Core responsibilities include:

Development Planning and Execution
  • Meet or exceed income and in-kind contribution goals, increase revenue, and diversify funding sources which include creating a solid plan for meeting future revenue goals
  • Implement key development plans that balances income roadmap, with detailed solicitation, acquisition, and moves management strategies
  • Incorporate a capital campaign and endowment strategy in collaboration with Executive Director, Board of Directors, and key stakeholders
  • Guide marketing and development efforts to be strategically aligned
  • Implement and monitor a Gift Acceptance policy that is approved and reviewed by the Board of Directors prior to new fiscal year
  • Provide oversight and guidance to the Fund Development Committee, and ensure that members are actively engaged in assisting Boys Hope Girls Hope Kansas City to meet annual goals
  • Ensure that collaborative development is leveraged with Boys Hope Girls Hope when appropriate for the growth and progress of the Kansas City affiliate and for the good of the Boys Hope Girls Hope Network
Donor and Volunteer Stewardship
  • Direct and support transformational relationships that are cultivated with all constituents—especially with individual donors, volunteers, corporate partners, and grantors
  • Source new major gift prospects are identified, cultivated, and converted to donors
  • Lead contribution efforts in a positive increase from year to year including:
    • New donor acquisition over loss by contribution percentage meets annual target
    • Total donor number gains over losses meets annual target
  • Ensure that Board members are actively engaged and informed with individual and corporate solicitation and stewardship
Contribution Recording and Reporting
  • Maintain donor database in Salesforce according to Network standards and reconcile monthly with QuickBooks
  • Record and expend gifts according to donor intent
  • Ensure that all donors and volunteers receive appropriate recognition and understand their gift’s impact
  • Provide bi-monthly development reports and direct development tactics and planning
Grant Seeking, Writing and Reporting
  • Excel in fulfilling all Boys Hope Girls Hope of Kansas City affiliate grant agreements and acquire subsequent awards
  • Identify and research new grant opportunities
Special Events and Appeals

Direct oversight of:

  • All appeals—email, direct mail, and targeted campaigns—are executed according to annual Development Plan and meet or exceed budgeted goals
  • Annual fundraising events meet or exceed budgeted income and expense goals
  • Each event follows a written plan for preparation, marketing, execution, follow-up, and reporting
  • Event attendees, who become first-time donors, make a second gift to Boys Hope Girls Hope of Kansas City within six months

Position Opening: Director of Development | Kansas City 1
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in executive-level, non-profit leadership and resource development
  • Extensive, successful history of major gift solicitation
  • BA required, MA preferred, in Administration, Management, or related field, or related fundraising certificates
  • Strong knowledge of the local philanthropic community and proven capacity for development planning, grant writing, research design and administration, capital campaign planning, and fundraising event management
  • Superb oral, written, analytical, research, and persuasive communication skills.
  • Possess ability to set, manage, and meet personal and organizational timelines and deadlines.
  • Have a high level of computer literacy, advanced-level experience with donor database systems, and an ability to self-direct his/her own mastery of such.
  • Prior experience or demonstrated knowledge of residential or youth programs, or similar social service programs
  • Successful prior organizational development and board relations experience
  • Prior work within an organization with a diverse community of stakeholders
  • Ability to coordinate multiple responsibilities and good problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work within a faith-inspired, values-based environment
  • Extensive use of phone and computer to communicate and conference with various stakeholders, the public, the local team, and network leadership. Evening and weekend work is occasionally required.
