Since 2017, 51 collegians have been accepted to the Boys Hope Girls Hope Steward Scholars initiative. Boys Hope Girls Hope is in itself a selective program which provides an incredible opportunity for young people in need to reach their potential. Boys Hope Girls Hope scholars work hard with our program teams in residential or academy settings on their individual academic and personal development goals. The Boys Hope Girls Hope Steward Scholars are a small, selected group of Boys Hope Girls Hope collegians studying in STEM or STEAM majors, who maintain a minimum a 3.0 GPA each semester in college.
“We’re now accepting applications for the fourth group of these exceptionally-focused young people, the majority who are first-generation college students going into highly competitive fields,” says LaShone Gibson, Senior Director of University Partnerships and Academic Excellence. “Current Boys Hope Girls Hope Steward Scholars are studying majors from engineering to chemistry, computer science to international relations, psychology to marketing. It’s impressive to see how these emerging leaders are using this experience to jumpstart their professional development in meaningful ways.” About 99 % are students of color, and around 2/3 are women.
“The Steward Scholars program makes me feel like I am powerful in some way.” says Nicole, a Boys Hope Girls Hope collegian. “Of course, I don’t have my own company yet but just being able to connect with other people that do, and talk to them, and meet face to face instead applying for a job on a website, gives me an advantage.”
“Thanks to Dave Steward’s generosity and innovative leadership, the Boys Hope Girls Hope Steward Scholars program models how industry leaders can support motivated young people in plugging into great networks and career opportunities,” says Kristin Ostby de Barillas, President and CEO. “This is just one of the many significant ways in which Mr. Steward and World Wide Technology have partnered with Boys Hope Girls Hope, and we’re very grateful.”
