Boys Hope Girls Hope’s mission is to nurture and guide motivated young people in need to become well-educated, career-ready men and women for others.  Founded in 1977 in St. Louis, Missouri, Boys Hope Girls Hope supports over 1,200 young people in 12 US cities, Guatemala and Mexico.

Job Description

The Executive Director provides overall leadership for the St. Louis affiliate of Boys Hope Girls Hope and reports to the local Board of Directors. The Executive Director carries primary responsibility for the leadership and mission execution of the organization, with particular emphasis on strategy, fundraising, board relations, and administration.

The Executive Director establishes the strengths-based culture of the organization in alignment with the mission, DNA, and values of Boys Hope Girls Hope and ensures fidelity to the policies, procedures, and conditions detailed in the BHGH Affiliation Agreement, Program Model, and Policy Manual.

The responsibilities of the Executive Director can be grouped into five broad categories: 1) Strategic Leadership and Governance, 2) Resource Development; 3) Program Oversight; 4) Public Relations; and 5) Stewardship and Administration.

Specific Responsibilities

1) Strategic Leadership and Governance

  • In collaboration with the Board and in line with the strategy and priorities of the BHGH Network, to develop, implement, and monitor progress of the affiliate strategic and annual operational plans, adapting to changing situations, responding to opportunities, ensuring future viability, and safeguarding fidelity to mission.
  • Drive the performance management and continuous quality improvement process of the affiliate in coordination with BHGH Network Headquarters and according to the BHGH Performance Management Tool and process
  • Provide the Board with all materials and information necessary to carry out their governance, planning, and fundraising responsibilities, especially with regard to practice and policy including the Boys Hope Girls Hope Policy Manual, Articles of Incorporation, By-Laws, and Affiliation Agreement.
  • Facilitate regular and effective Board and Board Committee meetings by ensuring that meeting agenda, materials for discussion, and meeting location are set and communicated in timely fashion, and that accurate minutes are kept and distributed.
  • Support the Board and Nominating Committee in their responsibility to recruit and orient new Board and Board Committee members in line with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion priorities of the organization. Provide recruitment, nomination, and orientation materials for the Board.
  • With the Board Chair, ensure that each Board Member understands their role and specific goals to be accomplished.

2) Resource Development

  • Ensure that the Development Director position is staffed and supported for high performance in accordance with budget, personnel, and state licensing guidelines
  • Serve as the lead fundraiser for the organization through relationship development with current donors and identification and cultivation of new funders and funding sources through a balanced advancement approach addressing individual, corporate, foundation, and in-kind gifts reflected to support fiscal health and meet current and future operational needs.
  • Responsible for effectively working with the Board of Directors, Development Committee and Development Director to: 1) develop and implement an income plan for necessary operational, capital, and endowment funds, 2) motivate volunteers to participate in all fundraising efforts; 3) utilize those volunteers for various campaigns and, 4) report progress, challenges, and successes to the Board.
  • With the Board of Directors Development Committee and Development Director initiate, lead, organize, support, and evaluate all capital, operational, and endowment fund-raising efforts including special events and all solicitations.

3) Program Oversight

  • Ensure that the Program Director position is staffed and supported for high performance in accordance with budget, personnel, and state licensing guidelines.
  • Supervise the Program Director through regular check in meetings and annual performance evaluations, to ensure that the program is implemented with fidelity and adherence to Boys Hope Girls Hope standards including its policies, program model, and child safeguarding practices and also in compliance with local residential licensing standards and regulations, and all applicable law.

4) Public Relations

  • Serve as the official face and voice of the organization in promotional and strategic communication opportunities and situations.
  • Promote a consistent public image of the organization in accordance with Boys Hope Girls Hope brand and communication guidelines.
  • Work with the team and board to ensure fundraising goals are met through the appropriate media channels, by creating and implementing marketing plans to target donors, referral sources, and the general public (this includes newsletters, brochures, website, news releases, and informational mailings)
  • Responsible for representing the program in person or by selecting appropriate volunteer or staff representative
  • Develop key media sources for the effective promotion and communication of the program’s activities to the public.

5) Stewardship and Administration

  • Lead and develop all direct reports and create a culture of personal and professional development.
  • Direct all office and administrative functions of the affiliate.
  • Ensure that all functions are adequately staffed through effective recruitment and retention efforts and that all team members and volunteers are properly screened, oriented, and supervised according to BHGH policy and standards.
  • Responsible for the proper stewardship of organizational resources, including development and oversight of the budget and maintenance of all organizational resources.
  • Formulate the annual budget for approval by the Board of Directors,
  • Monitor and report income, expenses, and financial position to the Board according to BHGH standards.
  • Implement Board and Boys Hope Girls Hope Network policies and practices for internal fiscal control and adherence to all accounting, record keeping, budget, audit, investment and reporting procedures and requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with regulations and standards for Federal 501(c)3 and state tax-exempt status and with state fundraising regulations.

Working Conditions

This is an executive position requiring a positive projection to the public, supervision of staff, excellent written and verbal communication, planning and organization, independent decision making, use of computer, making presentations, and attendance at meetings. Regular travel in the St. Louis area will be required. Evening and weekend work is occasionally required.

Qualifications

  • The position requires strong and balanced leadership, with a proven ability to communicate effectively, work with and engage diverse groups of people, manage staff and volunteers, raise financial and other support for a program, and coordinate multiple responsibilities.
  • The ideal candidate will be innovative, entrepreneurial, and committed to faithful execution of our mission – To nurture and guide motivated young people in need to become well-educated, career-ready men and women for others.
  • They will have experience in development and board relations, familiarity with youth programs, knowledge of the local charitable community, and a track record of effective management and program oversight.
  • Minimum 5 years of nonprofit leadership, fundraising, board development, and management experience.
  • BA in Administration, Management, or related field required, MA preferred. State licensing requirements may call for additional qualifications.
  • Candidate must pass criminal, child abuse, credit, and MVR background checks and drug screening.
